About Me

Stephen Bell is a cofounder, Narrative Director and Chief Strategy Officer at Gardens. In addition to narrative, gameplay and systems design, Stephen leads business development and strategy alongside his brother Chris, while also providing production support and administrative and corporate governance oversight. Stephen is both a Nebula and Hugo Award-nominated video game writer and narrative designer, and also a longtime motion picture screenwriter-director. Stephen was named one of the top up-and-coming screenwriters in the entertainment industry by thetrackingboard.com’s Young and Hungry List, was shortlisted for the annual Black List, was honored as a finalist in Francis Ford Coppola’s annual screenwriting competition, named a Nicholl Fellowship semifinalist, and was named one of the 100 most creative people in business in 2021 by Fast Company Magazine. Regarding past credits, Stephen was co-creator, writer and narrative gameplay designer of the viral indie sensation Blaseball. He was also a writer of What Remains of Edith Finch (2017 BAFTA Game of the Year), narrative designer of Where Cards Fall (2020 Apple Game of the Year), narrative consultant on Sky: Children of the Light (2020 Apple Game of the Year), additional writer and narrative consultant on Messhof's upcoming Ghostbike, and an additional writer on both Sea of Solitude: Director’s Cut and Annapurna Interactive’s 12 Minutes, among others.
